A physical for school, also known as a school physical or school health examination, is a medical evaluation that may be required by educational institutions for students entering school for the first time, transferring to a new school, or participating in certain school activities such as sports. The purpose of a school physical is to assess a student’s overall health and ensure that they are physically fit to participate in school activities safely.

Key components of a school physical may include:

Medical History: The student or their parent/guardian may be asked to provide information about the student’s medical history, including past illnesses, injuries, surgeries, and any current medical conditions or medications.

Physical Examination: Our healthcare provider performs a thorough physical examination to assess the student’s overall health. This examination typically includes measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, vision, hearing, and evaluation of general health status.

Immunization Review: Erica may review the student’s immunization records to ensure that they are up to date on required vaccinations according to state and school district regulations. Immunizations help protect students and the school community from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Screenings: Depending on the student’s age and state or school requirements, screenings for conditions such as scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine), tuberculosis (TB), and other health concerns may be conducted during the school physical.

Fitness for Participation: For students interested in participating in sports or physical activities, we may assess their physical fitness and determine if they have any medical conditions or physical limitations that may affect their ability to participate safely. This may involve evaluating cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal function, and overall physical readiness for athletic participation.

Documentation: After the physical examination is completed, we’ll typically complete a physical examination form or health certificate that verifies the student’s health status and clearance for school attendance and participation in activities.

School physicals help ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn and participate in school activities safely. They also provide an opportunity for early detection of health issues that may impact a student’s academic performance or overall well-being. It’s important for parents and students to check with their school or school district for specific requirements regarding school physicals and health examinations.
