DOT Physicals
A DOT physical, also known as a Department of Transportation physical examination, is a medical assessment required in the United States for individuals seeking to obtain or renew a commercial driver’s license (CDL). It is mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure that commercial vehicle operators meet certain health standards to safely perform their duties. During the DOT physical, a certified medical examiner evaluates various aspects of the individual’s health, including vision, hearing, blood pressure, heart health, respiratory function, and overall physical condition. If the individual passes the examination, they receive a medical examiner’s certificate, which is necessary for obtaining or renewing their CDL. This certificate typically needs to be renewed every two years, although some individuals with certain health conditions may require more frequent evaluations.
